When my child, Ezra was diagnosed with autism, I felt a mix of emotions—relief at finally having answers, but also overwhelming uncertainty about what to do next. Like so many parents, I wanted to do everything in my power to help my child thrive. That’s when I stumbled upon the idea of gluten-free and dairy-free diets. Friends, online forums, and even a few well-meaning strangers swore by these diets, claiming they could reduce autism symptoms and improve overall well-being. But as I dug deeper, I found a sea of conflicting information. Was this a legitimate therapy or just another wellness trend?

For many individuals with autism, food is more than just a source of nourishment—it’s a sensory experience that can be overwhelming, comforting, or even distressing. Food aversions—especially those related to texture—are a daily challenge that can turn mealtimes into a sensory minefield. As a parent of a child with autism, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating food aversions. My son, Ezra for example, eats only a handful of foods, and it’s not just about taste. Texture plays a huge role in what he will or won’t eat. Crunchy crackers? Yes. Mushy bananas? Absolutely not.

In a world that often equates communication with spoken words, nonverbal autistic individuals navigate life in ways that challenge societal norms and redefine what it means to connect. As a parent of a nonverbal child with autism, I’ve experienced the heartache, the triumphs, and the profound lessons that come with raising someone who communicates differently. There’s a moment I’ll never forget: the first time my child, Ezra, used his AAC device to say “mom.” He didn’t speak it, but it came through loud and clear, reminding me that language—whether spoken, signed, or typed—isn’t just about words. It’s about survival, connection, and the ability to say, “I am here.”
